In thinking about our book club series, and the type of books that should be part of it, I mentioned to Tiffany that I would like to read a biography. (In fact it was on my summer bucket list!) Well, little did I know that Tiffany loves biographies and was totally game. We had both heard about a biography about Elon Musk, and were intrigued. So today we bring to you our review of Elon Musk: Tesla, SpaceX, and the Quest for a Fantastic Future by Ashlee Vance.
Overall Pop Rating (1 to 5 stars, more stars the better we thought it popped!)
B: 3.5. Ashlee Vance weaves stories from individuals in both Elon’s personal and professional life, as well as from Elon himself, in a way that supports his overall narrative and holds the readers attention. I couldn’t put the book down!
T: 3.75. I thought this book was fascinating and it reminded me a lot of the Steve Jobs biography. The discussion about his childhood and background as well as how he managed his companies (which included Paypal, SpaceX, and Tesla most notably!) were super interesting.
Why were you drawn to read this book?
B: The allure of Elon Musk intrigued me. I wanted to read more about the man behind some of the most innovative companies (Tesla, SpaceX).
T: Well, he is working on space travel and luxury electric cars (which I see EVERYWHERE when I travel to LA!). What more do you need to want to know all about him?!?
What is one thing that you will take away from this book?
B: That you can in fact dream big and succeed. In The ONE Thing I took away the importance of setting goals that are big and specific. Elon’s story is a great example and success story of that philosophy.
T: I appreciated that Elon hit many roadblocks in his attempts to make each company successful, but he believed in the ideas and continued on despite that adversity.
Who would you recommend this book to?
B: Someone interested in innovation and history (in the making). Also anyone who wants to learn the story of a man going after his dreams, and willing to do anything (and everything) to see them succeed.
T: Anyone who is interested in business, technology, cars, or space travel. It was such a fascinating story and I really hope his ideas succeed!
