Month five of Fitness First found us riding at SoulCycle. While we’ve wanted to try a class for a while, we were terrified about getting on the bike! It was unlike anything we had tried to date, and we were slightly intimidated by the room when we entered, we left feeling absolutely amazing and asking ourselves, when are we going back!?
What is it?
SoulCycle is a take on the ever popular spin classes. You ride on a stationary bike and the instructor takes you through different intervals, asking you to turn up or down the resistance. SoulCycle adds an element though of focusing on your soul, almost like yoga, by giving motivational statements throughout the class. (Our instructor kept asking us “this is your moment – what do you want to do with it.”)
What do I wear?
Any workout clothes you are comfortable in, but no baggy clothes as that may inhibit your movements on the bike. The room does get rather hot and you do leave very sweaty.
What gear do I need?
Just a water bottle! If you have spin shoes, bring them, though you can also rent them there.
Overall I thought…
B: I absolutely loved it. I have tried a spin class here and there in the past, and never thought it was the exercise for me. The supportive atmosphere of the class and the high energy of the instructor made me love every minute of the class.
T: I LOVED it! I was totally intimidated beforehand, but so glad I pushed through that because it was awesome. I really enjoyed the dark room, pumping music, and motivational sayings from the instructor.
I was surprised by….
B: How sweaty I was during and after the workout, and how much I enjoyed the entire experience. I really felt in the moment, pushing myself to ride faster, and not thinking about how I looked or what the rider next to me was thinking about my form.
T: I didn’t realize that it would have some of the same components that I love about yoga! The instructor talked about letting go of your week and at times asked for you to close your eyes and just focus on the beat as well as channel the positivity of the room. I felt like I had a great workout while losing all the stress of my week and being present.
I wish I had…
B: Brought more water! I brought just a small bottle that I completely drank during the workout. I just underestimated the intensity.
T: As usual, I wish I would have relaxed a bit about trying something new. It was amazing and there was nothing to be nervous about!
Would you do it again?
B: Yes, 100%. I have already recruited others to go with me. I felt so amazing for the rest of the day that I left wanting to make it a regular part of my workout routine!
T: Yes, yes, yes! I was on such a high for hours after class that I cannot wait to go back again!
