Are you not having fun anymore when you workout?
On a run recently, this is exactly the question a friend and I were pondering. Our workouts had changed over the years.. In some ways the changes have been great, while others have been hard to swallow. Such as…
Time. We used to have more time to workout, almost too much time. A 6 mile run in the morning before work, or 3 hours of gym classes on a weekend, seemed normal. So in my mind, I grew to associate a “good” workout with being at least an hour. And if I didn’t have that time, then I felt like it wasn’t worth doing anything. Um.. what?! It is so not true! Just doing something – even 15 minutes of yoga in the morning – sets me on the right path from my day. A workout should be a stress relief, not a stressful experience. As I tell myself I will tell you too – do what you can. Dedicate the time you have and then go enjoy the rest of the day.
Some of my favorite at home short workouts right now are:
- Detox & Weight Loss Yoga Workout #4 (22 minutes)
- Barre Standing Abs (+ Butt, Hips, Thighs) (12 minutes)
- Fat Burning HIIT Pilates Workout (35 minutes)
Money. Now this is a double edge sword for me. When I was younger I didn’t have the funds to try new workouts. If it wasn’t part of my local gym membership, I wasn’t doing it. But now, I have a little extra cash to spend on trying new workouts, such as SoulCycle or Barre. I have to be careful to not say yes too often, or else there will be no extra cash left!
Workout wardrobe. Ok, who else used to wear cotton clothing to the gym? Anyone? Yep, I totally used to. I even remember the first time I purchased running clothes that weren’t cotton – circa 2007 at the Adidas store in NYC. But anyway, for me, having good quality clothes that I feel good in really changes the workout for me. They say to dress for success and that doesn’t just have to apply to the office.
I’ve picked up a few new pieces for the fall – check ‘em out!
- Berlin tank top from Fabletics and the climacool tank top from Adidas, both of which will be perfect for under a jacket or fleece for the Fall
- Lole Run Capris. My first pair that are mid-rise and feature mesh paneling, both of which I am enjoying.
- Socks from Target. I have “nicer” running socks, but I am not sure I see much of a difference so these do just fine!
Music. There is nothing like a good workout playlist to give the extra push I need to finish a hard workout. Here are some of my favorites, both old and new!
Finding a routine that works is challenging and getting back into a routine after a long hiatus is hard. Hopefully these tips will help you get your workout groove back.
