Last Fall, we experimented for the first time with capsule wardrobes. If you’re wondering what the heck a capsule wardrobe is, head on over to the post. We’ve both decided to continue with capsule wardrobes so we thought we’d tell you why.
Why we’re continuing with capsule wardrobes
Budget: Knowing that we only shop every 3 months for clothes means that we’re not buying random items that are on sale or that we decide on a whim that we need to have. Our wardrobes have already been thought out and we have made sure we have the key pieces we need so we feel less impulsive in our clothes purchases. We also immediately return items that we decide we don’t like. For example, for Tiffany, this winter she bought a couple of sweaters that she returned when they felt a little scratchy when she put them on again after purchasing. She knew she wouldn’t wear them and that was taking up money and real estate in her wardrobe!
Time: We both used to spend hours scrolling through websites looking at “New arrivals” or filling up shopping carts that we may never pull the trigger on. Now, we only spend time every 3 months thinking about the new trends we may want to incorporate and then purchase what is really necessary. We don’t even have the urge to shop in between each capsule wardrobe refresh time. This has even transferred into vacation shopping. Recently while on vacation, Becca didn’t shop, at all. Previously being “on vacation” was a great excuse to buy something new, without worrying about her budget. After all, it is a vacation, right?! Well, not anymore!
Ease: When you only have pieces that you know you like to wear and that fit well, it is much easier to get dressed in the morning! You also know what you have so even thinking about what to wear to special events or important meetings is so much easier. Did we say already that capsule wardrobes makes things EASY?
What are we adding to our Spring wardrobes?
We’ve both found that once you have a solid base for your wardrobe, you actually don’t need to buy many things each season. We’re each just buying a few key pieces to update our capsule wardrobes for Spring.
Becca: In looking through my wardrobe, I felt I was lacking in dresses and colorful pieces, so that is what I focused on adding. To date I’ve found a shift dress, a color block dress, and a silk tank dress, and I am hoping to find one or two more. I also was in need of some basics, like tank tops to go under blouses, comfy white t-shirts, and a striped shirt. Lastly, for a few upcoming warm weather weddings, I needed some flats with some bling! All in all, I am feeling excited about my spring capsule.
Tiffany: Some of the items I got rid of from my closet recently were still pieces I’d like to have – only in good shape and in flattering cuts. I replaced my very worn out leopard shoes. I found a white cardigan sweater that fit better than my old one. I also bought a striped dress plus a couple of cute new shirts – a bright green one and a floral pattern. I’m still on the hunt for some neutral and black flats to complete my spring wardrobe. Again, I got rid of some very worn shoes (how did I not notice that until I cleaned out my closet?!?) which need replacing now!
We’ve created a pinterest board for our spring capsule so you can see some of these pieces we’ve purchased, as well as other pieces we are still contemplating.
Who else is working on a spring capsule? We’d love to connect and see what you think of the capsule wardrobe process!
