In reading Rob Bell’s book How to be Here, one thing has stuck with me for months after reading it, “Pay careful attention to the things that make you angry and get you all riled up and provoke you to say, ‘Someone should do something about that!!!’ The someone may be you.” It got me thinking about the things that fired me up. At the time, I was frustrated about the lack of women in leadership at my company. I was frustrated with how hard it is to balance motherhood and a career. I was asking these questions – Why can’t my company promote or hire more women into leadership roles? Why does American society not provide the support or flexibility modern families need?
Are you noticing anything about how I was thinking about things? It was all about someone else needing to do something. When I read the quote above from Rob Bell, it smacked me in the face. That someone was me. I needed to stand up for the things I believed in. I needed to better support women. I needed to figure out how to change the story about how women and careers (and families in general…I wouldn’t say this is a women only issue given that I live with a modern dad!). What if this was the sign I was looking for?
I’m still trying to figure out how to tackle these topics in the best way I can, but I wanted to put it out there for you. Is there something that makes you angry and you feel like someone should do something about it?
It might be you.
Forgive me for getting all fan girl about Rob Bell and writing two posts in a row about things he’s said. Some things are just too important not to share!
