At Alt Summit, one of the keynotes was by Jihan Zencirli who makes trendsetting decor with her company Geronimo Balloons. I was struck by this thought “We are not any one thing.” Isn’t that beautiful? This is something that I’ve wrestled with because you can be good at certain things, excellent even, but then feel a pull to be or do something else. I felt stuck on that concept, but eventually came to this same conclusion that we can be so many things.
In work, you can thoroughly enjoy your job and excel at it, but then decide that it isn’t your thing anymore. You might want to try something new. I feel that way about the job I’ve had for the last million years (ok, only 12, but that’s a lot!). I can be good at being a sales person, a manager, a negotiator, but that doesn’t mean that’s what I have to keep doing. I now believe there are so many paths we could take and so many things we could be good at or enjoy. It’s up to us to choose what that looks like at any moment in time.
The other way I see this concept is in my personal life. I’m a mom, wife, sister, daughter, employee, baker, friend, tea lover, writer, painter, reader, blogger, entrepreneur, and on and on. I am not JUST any of those things. I’m all of those things and so many more. We only limit ourselves when we put ourselves in one box.
To me, this quote gives me freedom to explore and I hope it reminds you to do that too.
Let’s lift each other up!
